“You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.

Nehemiah 9:6 ESV

The sun rises and sets, day follows night, the seasons mark their course, and the years roll by. The stars and the planets track their patterns across the sky. Tides come in and out like clockwork, and the moon waxes and wanes before our eyes.

The insignificant seed pushes forth from the earth and becomes a stately oak that stands for centuries. Egg becomes caterpillar, caterpillar becomes a butterfly, the butterfly lays an egg, and the cycle perpetuates. One day we are children in the arms of our grandparents, and in the blink of an eye we are holding our own grandchildren and praying that they will know blessings and a long life.

God’s creation is astounding, and many devote their lives to the study of it, yet can only scratch the surface. Doctors, zoologists, oceanographers, astrophysicists… the list is long and serves as a testament to the unfathomable mind and power Who is the author of this vast creation. God is in science, art, music, beauty, inspiration, and so much more. Try as we might to fully understand, we can only look to creation to get an idea of His thoughts and His ways that are so far beyond the grasp of our understanding (Isaiah 55:8).

All creation worships and praises God (Psalm 66:4). All creation longs for the return of Jesus (Romans 8:22). And while we are part of that creation, we hold the special blessing to be called sons of God through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:5).

The beauty, grandeur, and complexity of creation serve as our daily reminder of God‘s power and His promises. It points our hearts to Him, lest we in our arrogance think of ourselves as any more than temporary stewards. All creation does His bidding, and will stand until the day He determines that it will be no more. His works remind us of our place in the eternal order of things, and the assurance that the day will come when we, united with all creation, will praise God in eternity:

And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
