What will Heaven be like? The idea of life continuing in Heaven after our earthly time is done is a comforting one, but it’s easy to let fear steal some of the joy we should have as Christians who will one day be at home in a place so glorious we can not even imagine its beauty.
It’s the very fact that we can’t imagine the full glory of Heaven that causes fear to sneak in. Between human efforts to describe the indescribable and the erroneous depictions of Heaven that have been put forth in various ways over the years, Heaven can seem like a confusing (and even boring) place. When we don’t have a clear picture of what Heaven will be like, it can have a truly negative effect on how we live our lives and how we look to the future.
The good news is, while Heaven can’t be described completely, we do know quite a bit about it. The Bible has some encouraging passages about the splendors of Heaven, and while all questions won’t be answered until we arrive there, many can.
Understanding what Heaven will (and will not) be like can help you grow closer to God, feel more at ease about the future, and be at peace knowing that loved ones are already there. It can also help motivate you to share the Good News with those in your life—ensuring that they will one day experience the glory and peace that only eternity with the Lord can bring!
1. Will we be bored in Heaven?
So often, Heaven is depicted as a cloudy, white, fluffy place where everyone sits around on a cloud and plays harps. If this doesn’t sound particularly exciting to you, you’re not alone! It’s not clear exactly where this interpretation of Heaven started or why it’s so persistent, but luckily it’s not Biblical. Heaven will be a place similar to Earth, but without all the damage that’s been caused over the years by sin. There will be beauty beyond all expectations, and we’ll get to see the way God intended things to be! If there’s something good that God created here, it will be in Heaven—and it will be infinitely better. We’ll have a deeper capacity for joy, and we will certainly not suffer from boredom. We’ll be with everyone who ever loved the Lord from the beginning of time, and there will be no time constraints to get in the way of real fellowship. Best of all, we will be in fellowship with God, we’ll be with Jesus, and the glory of it all will be more exciting than anything we’ve ever experience on Earth!
2. Will we be angels in Heaven?
Again, popular culture has done us a disservice in this area (there is a good amount of misinformation about what angels are, and you can find out more about them here). The Bible does not say we will become angels when we get to heaven. Instead, we will be humans—but with “resurrection bodies” like the one that Jesus has. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples and walked with them, talked with them, ate with them and touched them. We won’t become disembodied spirits floating around in space, or sprout feathered wings like an angel on a greeting card—but our bodies will be restored, free of disease and pain, and glorious! Without the damage of sin and decay that the world has suffered under since Adam and Eve, our bodies will be as strong and beautiful as God intended them to be.
3. Will there be animals in Heaven?
This is a question that’s crossed every animal-loving Christian’s mind. The good news is, there will be animals in Heaven! God created animals, He loves them and after He made them He declared them “good.” The Bible mentions lions, horses, wolves and lambs in Heaven—so we can be sure that animals will be a part of the afterlife. What about your beloved dog? According to Billy Graham, if it will make you happy if Fido is in Heaven to greet you, you can be sure that he will be! There have been arguments over the years as to whether or not animals have souls, with some presuming that if they do not they will not be in Heaven. It’s an interesting question, but one that really isn’t relevant—if God thinks animals are good, and if His children love them, that is reason enough for them to be in Heaven with us!
4. Will we recognize one another in Heaven?
Yes! Although our appearance may change, we will certainly know each other once we get to Heaven. There is a good deal of Scriptural evidence to back this up. We will, indeed, know each other and we will rejoice at the happy reunions between those believers who had been separated by death. In fact, once we get to Heaven, the sin and sickness and separation of this life will seem like it was over in an instant. Our lives are so short when compared to eternity, that from a Heavenly perspective things will look very different! In fact, we will understand and know each other far better once we are in Heaven than we did here on Earth: “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” (1 Corinthians 13:12)
5. How do I know that I will go to Heaven?
This is the most important question you can ever ask—and the answer is not difficult! The Bible says that if you depend on Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you can be assured that you will go to Heaven… “ because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9). Once you have been saved by faith in Jesus, you can be certain that you’ll one day be with Him in Heaven—and that nothing can take that assurance away. If you’d like to know more about this, this article offers a very helpful explanation. Understanding the glory that awaits us in Heaven is truly life-changing! If you’d like to learn more about Heaven, the book Heaven by Randy Alcorn and The Heaven Answer Book by Billy Graham are two excellent resources.
When the Bible says the road to hell is wide with alot of people and the road to heaven is narrow with a few, I’m doomed. I’m far from a saint. I feel there’s so much more to getting into Heaven besides just believing. It frightens me. I’ll never be good enough.
Pam, have you given your life to Jesus Christ? Romans 10:9 says, “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Nobody (but Jesus) is free of sin…none of us are good enough to get to heaven without the sacrifice of Jesus! But through Jesus, all of us who choose to belong to him and ask him to be Lord of our lives are truly set free of sin. It sounds too easy, maybe…but God made it easy so that none of us needs to be lost, we just need to take Him up on His offer of forgiveness and life. If you belong to Jesus, you have no need to be afraid because in God’s eyes, you are Good Enough!!!
Your right you wont be good enough! Ever! For it is by faith that you have been saved. Not of works lest any man should boast
But sometimes I feel that they were just words that I spoke. Nothing miraculously happened when I was baptized after speaking that I believe in Jesus Christ. There are so may times that I’m not worthy of His love or grace! Yes, I do ask for forgiveness, but how do you really know if God heard us?? I feel, at times, it’s a “mind game”.
Leslie, I think it’s a matter of where your heart is. Sometimes, I think all Christians feel like their faith is stagnating and doubt is part of the Christian walk. Do you love the Lord? Are you committed to following him? Are you trusting in Christ alone for your salvation? I’d spend some time in prayer, get in the Word every day (even if it’s only reading a few verses) and maybe find a Christian mentor who can encourage you. Miracles are wonderful, but they don’t always come in the way you’d expect. When you get saved, the miracle is that you move from death to life…but you don’t always see that change on the outside right away. Sometimes, miraculous change comes after years of being faithful even through doubt.
No one is good enough. It is by telling God your sorry for your sinus and believing he died and she’d his blood for our sins and believe God raised Jesus from the grave on the third day then you are saved. The Bible says He cast your sins as far as the east is from the West! Accept His gift and praise Him for His gift!! Pray that God will open your eyes and ❤️
Do Jews and Muslims who love God but think of Jesus only as a prophet go to Heaven?
In the Bible John 14:6, Jesus says…”I am the way, the truth & the life. No one comes to heaven, but by me”.
Jesus provides the only way to heaven, but it is our choice. 1rst John 1:9 it says “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins & cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. Following Jesus is the only way to heaven, which He offers freely to anyone willing to accept Him. Following old Jewish ways of penance & sacrifice will not get you to heaven. Same with the Muslins practices of penance & rituals. Jesus is the only way, but he loves us enough to offer us the choice. To choose eternal life in paradise with Him, or eternal torment with out Him in hell. He loves us too much to force our hands, and respects out free will to choose. I pray you will choose Jesus…the only way.
Ask and receive forgiveness for your sins and accept Jesus sacrifice as coverage for your sin. Keep your eyes and your heart focused on your relationship with God everyday growing closer and closer through reading his word and you’ll know heaven is your destiny.
My soul wait upon the Lord for the day that he shall open the clouds and there will be allowed shout and the trumpet shall sound and the dead in Christ shall rise and we shall follow after I in King Bible chapter 4 on that day we wait the Bible says we need to repent daily we need ask forgiveness we’re not even worthy enough to go there but by his grace we are saved, when we repent that means returned away from your sin pray anyone out leave your problems at the cross and leave them there turn away and asked you to Romans 10 and read the whole chapter and you will fine in Romans 10:13 and all you have to do is call upon the name of JESUS and you will be saved.
Amen!
When YHVHshua’s own disciples asked him what they had to do to be saved, he replied: Be baptized in the NAME of the father, the son and the holy spirit. Notice that baptism is an act not a thought (belief). It is in fact the “consideration” for the contract.
The father’s name “YHVH” (I am that I am) in over 7,000 occurrences in the bible has been removed and replaced with “TITLE’s”. The letter “J” was only invented about 400 years ago and is not the son’s name. YHVHshua by the way has many names actually given in scripture.
The “Kingdom of Heaven” will in fact be established and headquartered on Earth and is not a “universal” kingdom. Many are called, fewer are chosen and fewer still are faithful. READ your bible, dump the religious “dogma” and pray for the presence of the spirit to lead you into the truth.
Every single book in the bible has a like statement unto this “Those that love the father KEEP his commandments” all 10.
If you want to get right with the father get baptized “full immersion” and memorize the ten commandments. Post them on the door to your house. As you learn them the spirit will lead you to the truth of them.
In Heaven there are three degrees of glory [Celestial, Telestial & Terrestial] and then there is Hell where there is no glory. If you have kept the 10 commandments and repented of your sins, you go to Heaven. Heaven is a gated community. Where you go depends on your degree of righteousness. Comparing the three degrees of glory is like comparing our Sun, to our Moon, and the light of the stars. God lives in the Celestial Kingdom, a very high level of perfection. Good men and women of the Earth who are less perfect will abide in the lessor kingdoms.
